Tokenism or genuine inclusion? Start the eLearning, take the test, get certified

Too often, inclusion is reduced to symbolism one "diverse" face in a photo, a young person invited to the table without a real voice, an equality statement that never comes to life in practice. We call this tokenism, and recognising it is the first step toward real, authentic inclusion.

As part of the BETYLI – Beyond Tokenism: Youth Leading Inclusion project, a set of free digital tools has been developed to help youth organisations and individuals move from symbolic gestures to genuine inclusion. At the heart of this offer are an online course and a final knowledge test with a certificate.

eLearning Course: Tokenism vs. Authentic Inclusion

This interactive online course is built for youth workers and young people alike. It introduces the concept of tokenism and equips learners with the knowledge to detect it and the tools to move beyond it. The course combines video content, quizzes, real case studies and self-reflection tasks, and is available in multiple languages. Its goal is to empower more than 100 young people and professionals with practical skills and strategies for achieving authentic inclusion.

Final test and certificate

After the course comes a short online assessment that confirms what you have learned. The test consists of 20 questions covering all five modules from recognising tokenism and Hart’s Ladder of participation to designing co-creation and embedding inclusion in organisational culture. It takes around 30 minutes and uses a mix of single-choice, multiple-choice, True/False and matching questions.

Learners who score 70% or higher receive a personalised PDF certificate of completion, signed by the BETYLI Collective. The test is available in English, Croatian, Spanish, German and Dutch, so participants from across the partner countries can take it in their own language while receiving an internationally recognised certificate.

Youth workers from four countries successfully tested the Beyond Tokenism eLearning Course

As part of the Beyond Tokenism project, an international testing session of the project’s eLearning course “Tokenism vs. Authentic Inclusion” was successfully organised with the participation of 14 youth workers from four partner countries. The activity represented an important step in the final validation of one of the key project results and confirmed the relevance, accessibility and practical value of the course for professionals working with young people.
